Man of Steele

How nice for the Republicans that a hundred and something of them elected a black guy to head the party. Somehow I’m thinking all those Palinites who came rushing out from the holes they once lived in to oppose Barack Obama might not be too pleased.

But then, he does have a normal name, so it’s harder to confuse him with a Muslim. Some, though, they’re sure not happy. Pam’s House Blend notes that former KKK Grand Wizard and former Louisiana state Rep. David Duke is beside himself with rage. Pam took this from his Web page:

daviddukeTo Hell with the Republican Party!

GOP traitors appoint Obama Junior as Chairman of the Republican Party
I am glad these traitorous leaders of the Republican Party appointed this Black racist, affirmative action advocate to the head of the Republican party because this will lead to a huge revolt among the Republican base. As a former Republican official, I can tell you that millions of rank-and-file Republicans are mad as hell and aren’t going to take it anymore! We will either take the Republican Party back over the next four years or we will say, ‘To Hell With the Republican Party!’ And we will take 90 percent of Republicans with us into a New Party that will take its current place!I think the insanity of nominating ‘Mr. Amnesty’ John McCain and now this Black racist – will lead to insurgency in the Republican ranks, and a lot of dissidents getting elected in Republican Party primaries around the country. This will result over the next four years a real move by millions of Republicans to take the party back to the populist issues that are not only right but can win for the Republican Party. We must end affirmative action, protect our gun rights and all our constitutional rights, have a moratorium on immigration, we must have protectionism, yes I said protect American businesses and their workers from NAFTA and GATT and the lie of free trade, and we must have America First, not foreign interventionism. Our boys should be home protecting the American borders a not being murdered on the borders of Iraq or Afghanistan. The time as come for Republican Party to stand up to Obama and defend American heritage, rights, and freedom!

… Let’s make this abomination in the Republican Party, the last major party of White redoubt, as a rallying cry of resistance!

Whew. Need to shower off the spit from that diatribe. He also included some quotes from Steele about how he supports affirmative action, is opposed to the death penalty and wants strong gun control. But I think Dave need not worry about those things. I’m sure Steele has changed his position on all three of those items by now.

But I do find it interesting that the white supremacists oppose the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Who knew we had something in common? Well, ok, the reasoning is a tad different.

Meanwhile, the man of Steele himself seems a little confused, if you ask me. Meeting with House Republicans Saturday, he went on and on about what a great job they did obeying the Supreme Leader’s orders to make vote en masse against the recovery package — and I must point out that the damn thing is called a recovery bill, not a stimulus bill. We’re a far past needing a little “stimulation” to get things going again .

clueless-excuseYou and I know that in the history of mankind and womankind, government — federal, state or local — has never created one job. It’s destroyed a lot of them.

Um, right. Michael. Steve Benen at Political Animal points out that during Steele’s campaign for re-election as Maryland’s lieutenant governor, he and his running mate took credit for creating more jobs and promised to create more. But then again, there is that changing of one’s positions that does seem to happen to “moderate” Republicans once they decide to seek a position of power in the party. But Michael thought the lockstep Limbaugh vote was “absolutely beautiful.”

Let me start by saying, the goose egg that you laid on the president’s desk was just beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Now, folks, I know we’re in the era of bipartisanship, but it’s easy to be bipartisan when you outnumber the minority two to one. Anyone can be bipartisan then. But I thought it was very, very important that you sent a signal, and you sent it loudly and very clearly, that this party, that the leadership of this caucus, will stand first and foremost with the American people. You made it very clear that in order to grow through this recession, that you would not redistribute the wealth of the people of this nation. That you would empower them to earn it, invest it, save it, and spend it on their terms.

Now, boys and girls, we all know that what Michael really meant to say there at the end was that Republicans do not want the average American, let alone the poor American, to get a hand up from the government. But, he also didn’t say, it is important to keep pushing to make sure that your rich friends keep more and more of the money through tax cuts. And, of course, to fund those tax cuts for your rich buddies, we need to cut out even more spending that might actually help somebody.

20080611_mcconnell_bAnd it gives us a really big clue what to expect from the Senate Republicans, who’ve already made quite a name for themselves in roadblock construction.

So, on those terms I guess, Dave doesn’t have anything to worry about. Steele’s getting right in line with the party.

I don’t know what they can do about his skin color, though.

  1. Interesting blog you’ve got here. Relevantly, Michael Steele, born 1958, is a member of Generation Jones–the generation between the Boomers and GenXers–which has now taken over as America’s new leaders. Obama, and many in the team he has assembled, are Jonesers. The GOP is also now led by Jonesers, including Steele, Sarah Palin, Tim Pawlenty and Mark Sanford. I’m a Joneser and totally relate to this identity, and all the recent big-time national media attention about Generation Jones. We’re not Boomers or Xers! I’ve read several articles recently that make a strong case for learning more about Generation Jones to grasp the changes we can expect now in politics and leadership.

Steele embraces his Generation Jones identity, and speaks about the importance of the new Generation Jones leadership, in this short video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbbVe_Twui0

There is an op-ed about exactly this topic in USA TODAY this week: http://www.usatoday.com/printedition/news/20090127/column27_st.art.htm .

I’m very curious to see what Steele’s early weeks at this new job will look like.

  2. It will indeed be interesting to see what he does, which I expect will be to quickly repudiate any shreds of being a moderate he may have had and wholly embrace the extremist culture that is Republicanism these days. Steele, Pawlenty, Sanford and Palin may lead the party, but — with the possible exception of Palin, although she is more a rabble-rouser than a leader — they do not lead the Republicans. That honor goes to Supreme Leader Limbaugh, who is decidedly not a joneser.

For the record, I fall into that category too.

And thanks for dropping by. Feel free to do so any time.
