Republicans should rethink this 10 Co...

A couple of weeks ago, the Wall Street Journal let outspoken atheist Ricky Gervais write an article explaining how he follows the Ten Commandments better than most Christians.

It was amusing, but I feel he missed talking about one of the strangest ways that the Ten Commandments crops up in the modern era, which is because right wing nuts are pushing the list of ancient pronouncements of Yahweh to the Hebrews as some kind of moral formula for 21st century Americans. Louie Gomert in Texas is the latest example, as he’s trying to get Texas to recognize “Ten Commandments Weekend” in the first weekend in May.

Religious views don’t belong on...

I was mildly surprised to see some people react negatively to my post making fun of Chris Matthews and company for “debating” the existence of hell on what was supposed to be a news show. To my mind, it was clearly just a joking post that was aimed mainly at Matthews for having this discussion and for the panelists for refusing to denounce it as the waste of time and effort that it was.

But apparently, what caught people’s eye was my heavy use of the word “bullshit”, and there were many concerns expressed that I’m far too skeptical that religious people believe their own fictions. A typical example is here, and a discussion that erupted on Twitter between many people, but mainly between myself and Jamelle Bouie based off this post.

Padded bras, the requiring of and ban...

Early morning amusements: Salon caught Fox News being taken in by a satirical article, and reprinting it as straight news. Not-so-amusing is that they did it as straightforward hate-mongering, and still have not taken the story down or apologized for it.

The story, which is still featured on Fox News’ Fox Nation website, was illustrated with a picture of a woman’s mid-section and carried the headline “Pakistan: Islamic Clerics Protest Women Wearing Padded Bras as ‘Devil’s Cushions.’”

Come and take them!

Some days, I really think the organized Christian right should take some of their big bags of money and spend just a little of it doing some background research on the historical analogies they use to describe themselves.

Come and take them!
